Why Most People Stop Using Their Standing Desk

The research on sit-stand ratios, and the three setup mistakes that quietly kill the habit.

The ratio nobody follows

The commonly cited target is roughly 1:1 sitting to standing across the day, in blocks of 30 to 60 minutes. Almost nobody hits it, and the reason is usually mechanical rather than motivational.

Mistake one: no anti-fatigue mat

Standing on hard flooring is uncomfortable within twenty minutes. A mat costs $50 and is the difference between standing for an hour and standing for ten minutes.

Mistake two: monitor too low when standing

If your presets were set for seated posture and you never adjusted the monitor arm, standing means looking down. Set the arm once so the top of the screen is at eye level in both positions.

Mistake three: slow desks

A desk that takes fifteen seconds to raise, loudly, will not be raised. This is the practical argument for dual motors.
