The constraint

One thousand dollars, one person, one room. Everything below is gear we have used for at least a month.

The build

A budget sit-stand frame takes roughly $370. A refurbished ergonomic chair — buy refurbished, this is the category where it makes most sense — is about $300. A 27" 1440p USB-C monitor lands near $230. That leaves $100 for a screen bar and a mouse.

Where to spend the next $200

The chair, every time. It is the only piece of equipment touching your body for eight hours, and the gap between a $300 chair and a $600 chair is far larger than the gap between two monitors at the same delta.

Where not to spend

Cable management kits, desk mats and mechanical keyboards are all pleasant and none of them change how the day feels.
